Sep 2, 2020

The FIU-RCMI would like to welcome Dr. Jason W. Mitchell, the newest member of Robert Stempel College of Public Health & Social Work. Dr. Mitchell was hired under the FIU-RCMI/Provost’s Cluster Hire Initiative, and will be joining the college as an Associate Professor in the Department of Health Promotion and Disease Prevention.

Dr. Mitchell has over 12 years of experience in designing, implementing and evaluating HIV/STI prevention projects with sexual minority male couples and men. Central to his program of research is the use of digital technologies and relationship science to improve behavioral and biomedical approaches to HIV/STI prevention and substance use – two areas of critical Public Health importance where stark disparities continue to exist among sexual minority men. For his projects,  Dr. Mitchell uses mixed methods, collects and analyzes dyadic data, and applies the Couples Interdependence Theory for health behavior change as mechanisms to help guide intervention development and testing. Many of Dr. Mitchell’s publications have provided a further understanding about male couples’ relationship dynamics with respect to prevention. Additionally, he has been at the forefront of using manual and electronic algorithms to verify and validate online dyadic data collection from couples, as well as social media for recruitment. As a scientist,  Dr. Mitchell is committed to developing and testing innovative prevention interventions with couples.
