What You Need to Know as a Parent/Legal Guardian

In order for any teen to participate in this study they MUST have consent from a parent/legal guardian, and that parent/legal guardian must be willing to participate in the study as well. Our research requires that parents complete surveys along with their children. See below for more details.

Teens MUST currently be in high school.

Parent/legal guardian MUST provide consent for a teen to participate.

Parent/legal guardian MUST be willing to participate as well.

Parent/legal guardian and teen MUST come to FIU’s main campus.

Teens selected for Arm A (Grade 9 – 10) MUST complete 3 survey visits, one each year for 3 years. Optional MRI visit during year 1 and 3*

Teens selected for Arm B (Ages 13 – 20) MUST participate in 2 visits. Visit 1 will be completing surveys and Visit 2 will be completing an MRI scan.

*The ACE Project is no longer recruiting ARM A participants

What Will My Child and I Be Doing?

Families will be asked to visit FIU’s main campus to take surveys. Interested and eligible participants may also complete an MRI visit. During the appointment, both the parent and the teen will be given an iPad to  complete several surveys. If the teen is selected for the ARM B portion of the study, they will be required to participate in a corresponding MRI scan (which may or may not be scheduled on the same day). If the teen is selected for the Arm A portion of the study participation in the MRI is optional, however, they will need to return to FIU following the initial appointment for further surveys (and MRI scans if interested). Follow up appointments will be scheduled 12 to 15 months following initial appointment. For a more in-depth breakdown of who can participate in MRI scans, please click here.

How Much Will We Be Compensated?

Teen Participants can earn up to $40 (cash or gift card) for survey visits and $125 cash for MRI visits. Parent participants will earn $10 (gift card or cash) for survey visits as well as $25 cash for travel reimbursement.

How Long are Appointments?

Survey appointments can take up to 2 hours and MRI appointments can take up to 4 hours to complete. However, the MRI scan itself will last approximately 90 minutes.

Why is an MRI Scan Being Conducted?
We are interested in how brain activity is related to thoughts, feelings, and actions. To see this relation we conduct an MRI scan, a procedure that uses a strong magnetic to take a picture of the brain without the use of radiation or pain. MRI stands for magnetic resonance imaging and it is completely safe. Please follow this link for more information regarding the MRI portion of the study.

Arm A Participation

This part of the project is now closed, please preview ARM B.

If you’re a freshman or a sophomore, you can earn more! Since this study will be taking place over three years, underclassmen can potentially participate three to five times throughout the project. That means more money!  Below is some more information about who can participate and what they’ll be doing.

What are the Requirements?

Teens MUST speak and understand English.

Teens MUST get the consent of their parent/legal guardian.

Teens MUST be in high school.

Teens MUST complete an eligibility survey via phone.

Teens MUST complete a set of surveys at the FIU’s main campus.

How Often Do I Have to Come In?

We ask that our 9th and 10th graders complete three surveys sessions and two MRI sessions over the course of the next 3 years. Teens and parents are asked to come to FIU’s main campus one or two times this year, one time next year, and two times the following year. For example, if you are a 9th grader, you will complete a survey and an MRI session during your freshman year, then you will complete a survey session during your sophomore year, and lastly, you will complete a survey and an MRI session during your junior year. If only interested and/or eligible for survey portion, you will be asked to come in for one survey session each year for three years.

How Much Will I Get Paid?
You will receive a $40 gift card for EACH set of surveys you complete and a $125 cash for EACH brain scan you complete. Please note that MRI appointments don’t have to be scheduled on the same day as the survey appointment.
What if I Don't Want to Do an MRI?
That’s okay! If you are a 9th or 10th grader, you can just complete the surveys. For any questions regarding MRIs, please follow this link.

Arm B Participation

Come on over! If you’re a student between the ages of 13 to 20, we need you too! You still have an opportunity to earn some money, however one of the requirements for this group is that you MUST participate in BOTH the survey and the MRI portions of the study. Please see the boxes below for more details.

What are the Requirements?

Teens MUST speak and understand English.

Teens under 18 MUST get the consent of their parent/legal guardian.

Teens MUST be in high school.

Teens MUST complete an eligibility survey via phone.

Teens MUST be willing and eligible to complete BOTH surveys AND the MRI at FIU’s main campus.

How Much Will I Get Paid?

You will receive $40 cash  for the survey visit and $125 cash for completing the  MRI visit. Please note that MRI appointments don’t have to be scheduled on the same day as the survey appointments.

What if I Don't Want to Do an MRI?

Unfortunately, for ARM B the MRI is required for participation. Therefore, students interested in participating MUST complete the surveys as well as the MRI scan. For any questions regarding MRIs, please follow this link
