Approximately 35 FIU researchers attended the FIU-RCMI Health Disparities Research Seminar Series featuring guest speaker Dr. Karen Chartier, Associate Professor in Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of Social Work. Her presentation, “Intersections between Alcohol Use, Genetic Risk, and Diverse Populations” focused on the multiple factors that are associated with alcohol consumption issues, such as genetics, socioeconomic status, and cultural influences. Dr. Chartier highlighted the importance of expanding genetic research of alcoholism to include underrepresented racial/ethnic groups with culturally appropriate strategies
